Powerloom workers end strike
Powerloom workers have ended their strike after assurance by Divisional Commissioner, Tahir Hussain that their demand of 17 percent increase in wages has been notified by Punjab government and will be implemented by power-loom owners of Faisalabad in letter and spirit. The power loom workers had been agitating against the owners since July 20 and demanding increase in their salaries.

They had insisted that their wages should be increased by 17 percent as notified by the government. Furthermore, they demanded that their minimum pay should be fixed at Rs 7000/- as announced by the government. They said they had been waiting for the notification of Punjab government affirming the demands. In this scenario, a deadlock emerged between the owners and labourers of the power-looms. Divisional and district administration intervened in to the issue to resolve it.

On the directions of Commissioner Tahir Hussain, DCO Naseem Sadiq arranged negotiations between the representatives of both the groups at his office but it remained inconclusive as both the parties decided to rely on the notification of Punjab government.

On Friday, the notification finally arrived and the commissioner assured the representatives of labourers that the divisional and district administration would get the decision implemented in letter and spirit. On this assurance, labourers ended their strike. back
